We use psychophysical techniques, image processing, and current knowledge of visual neurophysiology to try to understand how the visual system processes visual information to result in our perception of the environment. Past areas of research have included the perception of 3-dimensional shape from 2-dimensional surface patterns, and the effects of aging on the perception of these patterns. Current research focuses on understanding how various forms of simulated visual impairment, such as blur and cataracts, affect the perception of visual stimuli such as simple patterns, shapes, and text. Results are aimed at contributing to the development of digital visual enhancement algorithms to aid patients with visual impairment on an individualized basis.
